Connecting Islamic Philosophy and Theology with Contemporary Thought
As one of Al-Mahdi Institute’s six specialist research areas, Islamic Philosophy and Theology engages with metaphysical and theological questions surrounding divinity, divine governance, eschatology, and revelation. Drawing on diverse Muslim intellectual traditions, our work examines the Creator–creation relationship through rigorous scholarship. Led by our Research Lead, we convene a biannual international conference, host research seminars, and publish translations and critical studies, as well as offering visiting fellowships. We aim to connect classical heritage with contemporary thought to enrich philosophical and theological discourse in Islam.
Our international conferences and workshops bring scholars together to explore key questions in Islamic philosophy and theology, from the nature of divinity to revelation and eschatology. These gatherings create a forum for dialogue across traditions and ensure classical insights continue to inform contemporary debates.
Through recorded lectures, podcasts, and book talks, we make cutting-edge research in philosophy and theology accessible to a global audience. By sharing scholarly perspectives on themes such as divine governance and metaphysics, we extend the reach of this field and highlight its relevance today.
Our regular seminars invite academics from around the world to present their latest work, fostering exchange on issues of theology, metaphysics, and the Creator–creation relationship. These conversations deepen the study of Muslim intellectual traditions while engaging with pressing philosophical and theological questions.
Papers from our conferences are published in edited volumes, preserving high-quality scholarship and making it available to both academics and wider audiences. These publications advance our aim of connecting Islamic heritage with modern philosophical and theological discourse.
Wahid M. Amin, DPhil (Oxford), is Lecturer in Islamic Philosophy and Head of Publications at Al-Mahdi Institute, and Associate Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. He holds a BSc in Physics (Imperial College London), a PGCE (UCL), a BA in Islamic Studies (Birmingham), and an MSt and DPhil in the Study of Religions (Oxford). His doctoral research examined Avicenna’s metaphysics and its reception between the 11th–13th centuries, with a focus on Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī. His interests include post-classical Islamic philosophy and theology, political theory, Qurʾanic exegesis, and modern Shīʿī legal thought.
