From classical exegesis to contemporary meaning
As one of Al-Mahdi Institute’s six specialist research areas, Qur’anic Studies investigates the Qur’an’s ethical, legal, theological, philosophical, spiritual, and literary dimensions. We explore its rich interpretive traditions while engaging with the Qur’an as a source of meaning in both its historical context and today’s world. Led by our Research Lead, we host a biannual international conference, regular research seminars, collaborative translation projects, and visiting fellowships. Our goal is to expand academic discourse on the Qur’an through critical and inclusive scholarship.

Regular seminars invite academics from around the world to present their latest research on Qur’anic exegesis, hermeneutics, and philosophy. This exchange deepens the study of interpretive traditions and broadens contemporary discourse.
Insights from our conferences and seminars are published in edited volumes, preserving cutting-edge scholarship. These works ensure the Qur’an’s many dimensions continue to be explored within both academic study and public conversation.
Professor Ali Fanaei is a moral philosopher and a leading Iranian public intellectual. He studied at the Ḥawza ʿIlmiyya of Qom for seventeen years, including advanced studies under the guidance of senior scholars. He later completed an MA in Islamic Theology at the University of Qom, as well as an MPhil and PhD in Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. His doctoral work focused on moral epistemology and the problem of justification in moral inquiry. He is a Senior Lecturer at Al-Mahdi Institute and Professor of Philosophy at Mofid University in Qom, where he heads the Department of Philosophy.
