Biography

Dr Hashim Bata is Lecturer in Islamic Legal Studies and Managing Director of the Al-Mahdi Institute. He began his formal seminary studies at AMI in 2004, under the guidance of scholars including Shaykh Arif Abdul Hussain, Sayed Mohammad Fatemi, and Dr Fanie, graduating in 2008. This training placed him within a long-standing scholarly lineage of the Shīʿi ḥawzas.

Alongside his seminary studies, Dr Bata pursued a BA (Hons) in Islamic Studies at The Islamic College, London (Middlesex University), between 2005–2008. He subsequently obtained an MA in Islam in Contemporary Societies from the University of Warwick in 2009, graduating with distinction. In 2010, he returned to Warwick to undertake doctoral research in Law, completing his PhD in 2014. His dissertation, available through Warwick’s repository, critically examined Shīʿi legal epistemology with particular attention to the authority of certainty (ḥujjiyyat al-qaṭʿ) in Islamic jurisprudence.

While undertaking his doctoral research, Dr Bata served on AMI’s Education and Research Board. In 2020, he was appointed as the Institute’s Managing Director. Since 2018, he has also been an Associate Lecturer in Islamic Studies at the University of Birmingham, where he contributes to MA teaching on Thematic Studies of Shiʿism.

His research spans uṣūl al-fiqh, fiqh, the history and development of Shīʿism, Islamic theology, and mysticism. His most recent monograph, Exploring the Mind of God: An Introduction to Shiʿite Legal Epistemology, was published by Brill in 2023.
